Chemistry in the kitchen can be rated G

When I took organic chemistry in college the first time, we had to make this stuff for one of our labs. All I remember from the experiment is that I made it in my dorm room, and I thought it was really cool unlike most of the stuff I did in orgo (are you beginning to see that I hated organic chemistry like a bad rash?). I made the "stuff" in a plastic bag, and it looked like a liquid, but it turned into a solid when you put pressure on it. As soon as you took the pressure off, it was a liquid again. I wanted to make this stuff for my nephews, so I looked it up and, thankfully, found the recipe. Because some of you are interested in these kinds of things, I thought I'd share.

Chem in your home. It's under ooblek. You can also make Gak (I used to make this with my mom for her first graders), silly putty, and flubber.

Have fun!

Looks like it. I think it's my first spam--how exciting.

I know!!!

Or else she thinks you need to color your hair.

Hmmmm...my hair is three, maybe four, colors. Everytime I dye it, it turns red. If I used blue dye, it would still turn red. They want me to pay $100 to dye it at the cheap/generic hair place, and I'm sure they'll turn it red (or worse) too. The people who can make it a real, solid color want me to pay more than I can get from selling my blood plasma.

It will stay four colors. I dare them to laugh at me.

I don't need to know about countries developing nuclear weapons--I have enough things to worry about.

My hair always turns red, too!!!! No matter what! Sometimes it will be brown for a day or two, but after I wash it like twice it is red. And yet, my roots aren't red. They are darn brown. So I dye it extra dark brown. I am so confused.

I wish a hair stylist read my blog--then we could get some answers about our red-wannabe-hair.

That's SPAM? How weird is that? Is this someone just trying to increase the hits on their blog, or do they really see there's going to be a compelling interest in a blog entry for chemistry experiments for anything to do with intelligence estimates about Iran's getting the bomb?

Hmmmmmmmm ... well, maybe she thinks you're running a home centrifuge operation and have been trying to separate uranium isotopes to help the Iranians, I'm sure that's it.

Thanks for the recipes!

I think peroxide in hair color "scoops" out other pigment in strands and leaves little pits. I would guess that most dyes except for ash blondes and browns, blue-blacks, and silver have more reddish tones than a range across the spectrum like natural hair, so when you apply a typical auburn or other 'warm' color to already brown or medium black hair you are replacing the cool tones with warm, for double red.

Props to Edie. I knew I loved my Marxism classes for a reason;)

Thanks, I like your style, too, scientist.

Yes. That sounds exactly right, Edie. I have tried to use the ash tones of hair color. But I am starting to think I may just have red hair:)
