Take your folic acid

If you can't remember to take something as important as your folic acid supplement, you shouldn't even think about having a baby.

Your child does not deserve spina bifida.
Your child does not deserve anencephaly.

You would not choose to abort your child, so why would you choose to expose him/her to these devastating birth defects?

We can do better than this, people.

Sorry, I needed to rant to someone.

As I recall I was really bad about taking supplements when I was pregnant but I eat well. So shoot me. I had 3 healthy kids.

Let us never forget that MSN lives to terrorize us.

I admit to not taking my pre-natals, as well. They made me vomit, and I was tired of vomiting. I did eat the TOtal cereal everyday, which my OB recommended.

21st and POW: You two made it a point to gain your necessary nutrients via your diet--unfortunately many people do not. I just can not stress how important folic acid is in development. It is one of the few nutrients that we as scientists and physicians know is completely necessary for development.

It is difficult for people who get sick from their prenatals and a good OB will play with the supplement content in order to find out what your system can handle. I also belive that it is always better to get your nutrients from what you eat rather than a pill, if possible. It's those people who don't try at all--who haven't bothered to figure out what is important and necessary for their child. They'll play Mozart to their stomachs but they won't be aware of their folic acid intake.

Good timing, SFTR. Not sure if my husband and I will be planning on having kids before a good 18 months -or at all, considering last year- but I was thinking about starting taking prenatal vitamins again, just on the off chance... (they're not going to hurt me, and if an 'accident' does happen, I'd rather feel safe about that part of the situation, cuz I'll be wondering about tons of other issues!) ;)

I was thinking about this, this week, so I'm taking your post as the little extra kick in the butt that I needed to get myself some prenatals at the pharmacy on my way home tonight.

You can take folic w/o having to take pre-natals.

I started taking folic before I even got pregnant.

This makes me want to rant, too, really.

There are so stinking many things that can go "wrong"...why not do everything in your power?
